Moondance

Break free from the death

The night of the new moon
Let’s slip out through the window
Our two shadows a silhouette of flight

(Bewildered We’ll change in a sway)
The new moon, purple
(Temptation Beckoning Let’s sing)

The backlight of the rabble is black
Souls of the dead, that aim to paint us over
The other you in the mirror
Smiles with what kind of face, I wonder
Yeah yeah
Destroy it

The morning of the full moon, the world is still half asleep
And a volcano touching a pillow erupts

(Bewildered We’ll change in a sway)
The wind, pale blue
(Temptation Beckoning Let’s sing)

Even including your servile smile, you’re beautiful

As far as the sun below the freezing point
With calm steps—

“If you are to rot, better to burn out”

The backlight of the rabble is black
Souls of the dead, that aim to paint us over
The other you in the mirror
Smiles with what kind of face, I wonder
Yeah yeah
Destroy it
Say no no throw away the past
Break down down extinguish the moon

Behind the Scenes

Shortly after the album GRACE was released, Saga held a nearly 3-hour live event on Youtube to talk at length about each song on the album, and while the archive of this incredible talk was only up for a brief period of time after the event ended, I jotted down a few notes during the course of it, and here are two remarks about Moondance:

Saga encouraged SHOU to emphasize some of the pronunciation in the song to give it a thick Visual-Kei flavour (uzoumuzou~ kagami no naka~).
In addition, he requested that fans who were to attend lives try to dance to the song while swaying their hips in a sexy way.

Later, in ALICE NINE. Official note 169, Saga went into detail again about how the song was made and what influenced it; some of the discussion is under the cut (which you can read via the aforementioned link if you’re a subscriber), but the following tidbits are openly available for anyone to read.

This is HIROTO’s composition, but we had the demo at a rather early stage. From there, for about 7-8 months we couldn’t reach beyond it, so it’s a song whose production didn’t readily progress.

[…] the demo was an entirely different thing. While making it groovier, like we spoke about earlier, it was like I was creating a space within it. In the beginning it was being crammed with guitar and bass riffs, and there was also a ton of synth in it. I dropped about 80% of the synth, and where I could substitute for it, I was like, dropping in guitar.

I was sort of coming at [the arrangement] from a place of wondering what would it be like if the “bewitching” quality of BUCK-TICK-san were channeled in an ALICE NINE. way.

Personally, for the image of the song, I constantly had the face of ISSAY-san from Der Zibet in mind.

[…] when recording the vocals, I also requested that SHOU-san have a singing style that was consciously bewitching. This song also had a fairly late vocal recording, soat that time he’d already gotten used to the “singing style” that I wanted for the album and as such, it also took no time at all. I have a memory that the vocal recording was quite fast. This song is one that, not too long ago, SHOU-san wouldn’t have been able to sing.
