Behind the Scenes
During the period where the album was being made, Saga held a special live broadcast event via YouTube so that fans (or anyone interested) could sit in on the bass recording process with him. The song he happened to be working on at that juncture was Roar. Attendees got to watch as he recorded the bass solo a few times before getting that perfect take! Given that no aspect of making or recording an ALICE NINE. song had ever been made public before, it was a pretty exciting event. Though no archive of the footage remains up, Saga spoke about the public recording experience in a subsequent Official note and included some screenshots of it, assuring readers that the perfect take we witnessed was the one included on the album!
Interviewer: Has it already been given a title?
Saga, ALICE NINE. Official note no. 141
Saga: Right now it has “Roar” as a title.
Interviewer: Will you be using the bass take recorded during the public REC on the album?
Saga: Of course!
Interviewer: If I think about it, although you all shared that time together, it sort of gives them the feeling of having participated in creating the album, doesn’t it.
Saga: Yes, yes, yes! Yes, that’s right. With that, even if a new song were suddenly put out, from the start they’d be left with a recollection of like, “ahh, that’s it, isn’t it!”. I wanted to leave them with that.
Interviewer: How was it to try doing a REC in this format, Saga-san? It’s different from usual, isn’t it.
Saga: I didn’t know what it would be like to do something I haven’t tried before but when I tried it, I was able to do it surprisingly normally. Though compared to how I always re-record over and over, this take might have lower precision. But this time rather than seeking to play a take being nit-picky and super-severe, I think it’s more that there is significance in doing it that way in an environment where everyone is watching, of playing within an air of tension.
Later on, for his birthday, Saga held a pre-concert event where he was interviewed live in front of an audience for his upcoming Official note update. During the interview, he had the following exchange about Roar with the interviewer; part of it is below the subscriber line, so if you are a subscriber you can read the rest in ALICE NINE. Interviewer: […] Saga-san, in [the Visual-Kei soccer team] what gets said to you by your kouhai-teammates?
Saga, ALICE NINE. Official note no. 155
Saga: Someone came to me to ask, matter-of-fact, “which band’re you from again?” so when I replied “ah, I’m from ALICE NINE.”, he said, “I know of it!”. Someone beside that guy got mad and was like “the hell’re you saying! It’s Saga-san, dumbass!” and that was really funny (the audience are very much in agreement). I think that there should be more of that sorta thing not only in soccer, but also in music and battle-of-the-bands and stuff. We do that and we sharpen each other and I think you should have friendly rivalries. Like, “we actually met ALICE NINE. at a battle-of-the-bands event and both their looks and their personalities were seriously shit, man” (the audience bursts into laughter), which I think is completely fine, you know. And then when we try to put on a ridiculously cool live, we become “cool”. Because by competing on that sort of point, we each have to become cooler. Whatever would get said to me doesn’t really matter to me.
Interviewer: In the past, in the band unit and even in the office unit, there was an argumentative atmosphere, wasn’t there. I get the sense that there isn’t really anything like that now.
Saga: Yeah. So I made that sort of thing into a rap. I added in a “Roar”.
Interviewer: It’s HIROTO-san’s song, isn’t it?
Saga: Yep, yep. I ended up adding a rap into a HIROTO song without asking him. Put it in yesterday though. Although it’s my birthday I was rapping super vulgar phrases like, “your turn is next, bastard”. Crazy, right? Even though it’s my birthday. (He laughs like ‘heheheh’ while the audience nods in agreement).
Interviewer: Saga-san, you got permission from HIROTO-san and put that in, right?
Saga: Nope, I’m not getting his permission.
Interviewer: What?!
Saga: More or less, I too was worried because of the fact it’s a HIROTO song. I was worried, and was thinking of adding in a rap with a Saga-part and a HIROTO-part. It is HIROTO’s song after all, so at the start I had no intention whatsoever of putting that sort of thing in but (big laughs from the audience), I was thinking I would add in a HIROTO-part too. Didn’t LUNA SEA also have that? A thing in the song called “a Vision” where J-san and SUGIZO-san took turns having a dialogue?
Interviewer: They did.
Saga: I did get to the point of saying “let’s do that” to HIROTO-san. However, I ended up doing it by myself (the audience bursts into laughter). Moreover, I haven’t told HIROTO yet.
Interviewer: What?! So then you’re saying that the audience gathered here knows this information even before HIROTO-san?
Saga: That’s right. I’m wondering how best to let HIROTO know. How should I tell him? (He ask this to the audience). Is it to tell him “sorry, I did it alone” on Twitter? (He’s told he can’t by the audience) What should I do? Yeah, as I thought, it’d be awful, doin’ that.
Shortly after the album GRACE was released, Saga held a nearly 3-hour live event on Youtube to talk at length about each song on the album, and while the archive of this incredible talk was only up for a brief period of time after the event ended, I jotted down a few notes during the course of it, and here are two remarks about Roar:
★ Saga was very much looking forward to playing the song live on the upcoming tour.
★ Saga then specified that during lives, people on the right side on the audience should shout “HATE!” during the chorus, while people on the left side of the audience should shout “LOVE!”.
Following that GRACE YouTube event, Saga then spoke about the album again in a long interview on the ALICE NINE. Official note. What he had to say about Roar after it had been released is above the subscriber line on the interview page, so anyone can give it a read:
Interviewer: Well then, what about the next one, “Roar”?

Saga: It’s HIROTO’s original song. When HIROTO was turning in songs for the album, the very first one he brought us was “Roar”. We had it in the same period as “Funeral” and “Kai” and we did the recording at an early stage. HIROTO likes singalongs and call-and-response with the audience during lives, so I understood right away upon listening to the demo that in this song as well he’d want to put that sorta element into the chorus and since it’s a song that was made in the stages while scooping that impression up, the level of energy in “Funeral” and “Kai” was completely different. Having said that, I worried quite a bit that it was really opposite to the album. And then I chipped away as much of the synth that was in the song as was possible, creating a shift to a sound that had a sexual feeling. When I did that, for me it turned into a feel that was close to being classic rock. There’s quite an homage put into the drum solo. The original material was from a band called The Who.
Interviewer: Saga-san, the fact that you know of The Who is unexpected.
Saga: Because it’s a legendary sort of band from before I was born, right? I like a certain amazingly cool scene of theirs. I was able to sneak that as a secret ingredient into this drum solo homage so I’m extremely pleased with it. On the next tour, I’m thinking we might include the stage lighting and press the original material of the homage even more.
